Using parallel computation to improve Independent Metropolis--Hastings based estimation

چکیده
In this paper, we consider the implications of the fact that parallel raw-power can be exploited by a generic Metropolis–Hastings algorithm if the proposed values are independent from the current value of the Markov chain. In particular, we present improvements to the independent Metropolis–Hastings algorithm that significantly decrease the variance of any estimator derived from the MCMC output, at a null computing cost since those improvements are based on a fixed number of target density evaluations that can be produced in parallel. The techniques developed in this paper do not jeopardize the Markovian convergence properties of the algorithm, since they are based on the Rao–Blackwell principles of Gelfand and Smith (1990), already exploited in Casella and Robert (1996), Atchadé and Perron (2005) and Douc and Robert (2011). We illustrate those improvements both on a toy normal example and on a classical probit regression model, but stress the fact that they are applicable in any case where the independent Metropolis–Hastings is applicable.

A Method for Learning Matching Errors in Stereo Computation
This paper describes a novel learning-based approach for improving the performance of stereo computation. It is based on the observation that whether the image matching scores lead to true or erroneous depth values is dependent on the original stereo images and the underlying scene structure. This function is learned from training data and is integrated into a depth estimation algorithm using t...

متن کاملApproximating Bayes Estimates by Means of the Tierney Kadane, Importance Sampling and Metropolis-Hastings within Gibbs Methods in the Poisson-Exponential Distribution: A Comparative Study
Here, we work on the problem of point estimation of the parameters of the Poisson-exponential distribution through the Bayesian and maximum likelihood methods based on complete samples. The point Bayes estimates under the symmetric squared error loss (SEL) function are approximated using three methods, namely the Tierney Kadane approximation method, the importance sampling method and the Metrop...
متن کاملEfficient parallelisation of Metropolis-Hastings algorithms using a prefetching approach
Prefetching is a simple and general method for single-chain parallelisation of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm based on the idea of evaluating the posterior in parallel and ahead of time. Improved Metropolis-Hastings prefetching algorithms are presented and evaluated. It is shown how to use available information to make better predictions of the future states of the chain and increase the e¢ ...
